Defending conference champ boys’ track team back for more

The Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ track and field team won a Wright County Conference West championship last season – and to be honest, the Panthers would like to do it again.
“We’d like to be in a position to contend for the conference title again this year,” coach Josh Metcalf said. “Like always, we’d like to continue to improve as the season goes along and be performing our best at the conference, subsection and section meets.”
While GSL lost several key members to graduation, the overall numbers continue to improve and include seven competitors that ran in the section finals as well as at the state meet.
“Among our returnees that consistently scored for us last season are: Shane Ehrke, Aaron Giesen, Jacob Litzau, Grayson Maresh, Mitch Rothstein, Austin Schroepfer and Michael Schaefer,” Metcalf said. “The team is also consistently growing and we have a lot of new kids out this season.”
While the distance and field events bring back a good bit of experience, Metcalf noted that the sprinter corps is a young unit this season.
“But there’s good numbers and they have a good work ethic,” he added.
While the weather took a turn for the worse as of late, a rather cooperative month of March allowed the team to bust out of the gym and get in a number of workouts outside.
“It’s been a good start to the year,” Metcalf said. “The weather has been decent overall; the distance runners have been able to get out a lot and sprinters most of the time.”
