Dennis Carl Wandrei, 76, of Glencoe


Dennis Carl Wandrei, 76, of Glencoe, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2016, at Glencoe Regional Health Services.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, Jan. 3, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe with the Rev. Ronald Mathison officiating. Dawn Wolter was the organist. Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace,” “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” and “Onward, Christian Soldiers.”
Military honors were by Glencoe American Legion Post 95 and Glencoe VFW Post 5102. Honorary urn bearers were Spencer Steen, Chase Clay and Cruise Clay. Tanner Steen was the urn bearer.
Dennis Carl Wandrei was born June 29, 1940, in Glencoe, the son of Arnold and Christine (Exsted) Wandrei. He was baptized July 14, 1940, by the Rev. Streufert, and confirmed in his faith on April 11, 1954, by the Rev. A.H. Fellwock, both at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe. He received his education in Glencoe, graduating on May 28 with the Glencoe High School class of 1958. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Aug. 7, 1958, and was stationed in Korea. He received his honorable discharge on July 12, 1960, having attained the rank of U.S. Army SP4.
On Jan. 7, 1961, he was united in marriage to Joan Ortloff by the Rev. A.H. Fellwock at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe. They were blessed with three children, Daniel, Debra and Lynn, and shared almost 56 years of marriage.
Mr. Wandrei worked at Green Isle Manufacturing for 22 years until the plant was sold and closed, and then he purchased a grocery store, Denny’s Market, in Brownton, which he and his wife ran for 15 years. Since retirement, he worked at Seneca Foods until this fall. He was a lifelong member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe, serving as an usher for many years.  He was a very active member of the Glencoe American Legion Post 95, acting as the honor guard commander, and also was an active, lifetime member of the Glencoe VFW Post 5102, holding the position of adjutant and serving on the honor guard. He enjoyed being a member of the Glencoe Sportsmen’s Club.
Mr. Wandrei was a  sweet, quiet and witty man with a dry sense of humor. He enjoyed sports, especially the Minnesota Vikings, Gophers and Twins. He also loved to go fishing, play sheephead and Elvis. He cherished the time spent with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Wandrei of Glencoe; children, Daniel (Sally) Wandrei of Shakopee, Debra (Steven) Steen of Eden Prairie and Lynn (Sean) Clay of Elk River; grandchildren, Tanner Steen, Spencer Steen, Chase Clay and Cruise Clay; brother, Kenneth (Barbara) Wandrei of Savage; sister, JoAnn Lipke of Glencoe; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Christine Wandrei; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clarence and Elsie Ortloff; brother-in-law, Fred Lipke; sisters-in-law, Betty (Delmer) Wittenberg, Ilo (Eddie) Winterfeldt, Vivian (Maynard) Trocke and Yvonne (Harlan) Dammann.
