Despite construction, GSL expects to start school Wednesday, Sept. 6

Despite delays in construction, the Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) School District still expects a Sept. 6 start date, according to Superintendent Christopher Sonju.
“They’re a little behind, by about a week or so,” said Sonju. “There will be areas like our locker room that we still need to work on when we start school. We knew from the very start that there were going to be a few places students couldn’t go. But we’ll still be able to have school and have lunch … that is still expected to happen.”
Because of the change in the start date from Sept. 5 to Sept. 6, GSL is offering an all-day open house event on Sept. 5 for students and parents to tour the schools, find classrooms and get the general lay of the land. Staff will be available at Lakeside Elementary and the new school facility in Glencoe from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. to assist students and parents in finding their way.
“We wanted to give parents as much time and flexibility as they can in their schedule,” said Sonju.
Sonju hopes that having the open house just a day before the first day of school will help students retain more of the directional information they will be given. He also hopes that the event will help with any anxiety students might have about the new school and help the first day of school run more smoothly.
