DeWayne “Duke” Hanson, 72, of Glencoe, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017, after a short illness, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 22, at Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe with the Rev. Katherine Rood and the Rev. Vicki Toutges officiating. Peggy Hatlestad was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Thine is the Glory,” “Standing on the Promises,” “Joy to the World” and “Blessed Assurance.”
Casket bearers were Brian Hayes, Colin Overby, Randy Bruns, Alex Hayes, Cailin Hayes and Zach Hayes. Honorary casket bearers were Mr. Hanson’s grandchildren. Interment was in the Glencoe City Cemetery.
DeWayne “Duke” Hanson was born June 25, 1945, in St. James, to Roy and Elizabeth (Malmgren) Hanson. He was baptized as an infant and was confirmed in his faith as a youth, both at St. James Catholic Church in St. James. He attended school in St. James and was a graduate of the St. James High School class of 1964.
He served in the Army Reserves during the Vietnam War era from 1963 to 1969, and attended active duty training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, in 1964.
On Dec. 6, 1975, he was united in marriage to Terri Bruns at Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe. They resided in Faribault, Hibbing, Grand Forks and moved to Glencoe in 1988. They were blessed with four children, Richard, Michael, Jennifer and Patrick. They shared 42 years of marriage together.
Mr. Hanson was a part-time police officer in Glencoe and was one of the first emergency medical technicians (EMT) in the Glencoe area in the early 1970s. He worked at Harpel Brothers, Inc., and Kevin’s Auto in Glencoe, selling vehicles until he retired in 2006. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe. He also was a member of Glencoe Lions Club 29907, the Rotary Club of Glencoe, District 5950, Glencoe American Legion Post 95, the Glencoe Area Chamber of Commerce, the park board in Glencoe, and was chairman of Glencoe Days for many years. His children lovingly referred to him as Mr. Glencoe, and he never shied away from a microphone.
He was very proud of Glencoe and volunteered whenever he could. He organized bike-a-thons and called bingo for the Lions Club. He also was chairman of ROCK (Reaching Our Community’s Kids). He also enjoyed watching NASCAR and was an avid Vikings fan. He thrived in the Texas sun on the beaches of South Padre with his wife Terri during the winters. He cherished the time spent with his family, grandchildren and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Terri Hanson, of Glencoe; children, Richard Hanson (significant other Amber Brusven) of Glencoe, Michael Hanson of Glencoe, Jennifer (Jason) Urista of Minneapolis and Patrick (Tosanna) Hanson of Glencoe; grandchildren, Braxton Hanson, Logan Hanson, Hannah Hanson, Hailey Hanson, Julia Hanson, Maren Urista and Ellie Urista; nephews, nieces, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Elizabeth Hanson; and stepfather, James Pauley.
