Donald “Don” Lloyd Blum was born Oct. 15, 1933, in Grafton Township, Sibley County, the son of Adolph and Lena (Koebnick) Blum. He was baptized Nov. 5, 1933, by the Rev. C.H. Kowalske and confirmed in his faith on July 4, 1948, by the Rev. M.A. Schulz, both at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart.
On March 26, 1953, he was united in marriage to Marianna Mavis (Lindeman) Blum, also at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart. They made their home on the same farm on which Mr. Blum was born and raised, just south of Stewart. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Anthony “Tony,” Carolyn, Michael “Mike,” and Gina. They lived on the farm until 1999, when they retired and moved to a home on Long Lake near Grove City. In 2004, they moved to Glencoe, where Mr. Blum had lived since.
Mr. Blum farmed, raised livestock and ran a repair shop on the farm. Even after he gave up farming and raising livestock, he continued his work in the repair shop, where the coffee was always “on” for his friends and neighbors. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart. From 1965 to 1982, he and his wife belonged to and enjoyed fly-in gatherings of the Flying Farmers.
Mr. Blum took every opportunity to travel, visiting many different states, Canada and Mexico, as well as enjoying several cruises throughout his lifetime. When closer to home, he enjoyed playing cards, fishing, deer hunting, doing projects with his hands (building dollhouses for his granddaughters and a grandfather clock that he and his wife enjoyed), and watching TV. In recent years, he found enjoyment in country drives, listening to old-time music and keeping up with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities.
He is survived by his children, Carolyn (Jim) Schiro of Glencoe, Michael (Julie) Blum of Kirksville, Missouri, and Gina (Paul) Sievert of Glencoe; grandchildren, Nathanael (Heather) Blum, Joshua Blum, Elizabeth (Zachary) Jennings, Matthew (fiancé Danielle) Blum, Paul Sievert II and Anna Sievert; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Elena, Charlotte and Tucker Blum and Aiden and Emma Jennings; brother, Ralph Blum (Phyllis) Blum of Hutchinson; brother-in-law, Thomas (Ruby) Lindeman of West Plains, Ohio; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Marianna; son, Anthony; sisters, Dorothy Wagner and Julia Blum; brother-in-law, Dale Wagner; and niece, Misty Gustafson.
Arrangements are with the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe. Online obituaries and guest book are available at www.mcbridechapel.com.
