E. Mae Barfknecht, 88, of Gaylord

E. Mae Barfknecht, 88, of Gaylord, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gaylord with the Rev. James King officiating. Jeanne Bruss was the organist, and congregational hymns were “Savior, I Follow On,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “How Great Thou Art.”
Jon Barfknecht was the urn bearer. Interment was in the church cemetery.
E. Mae (Kroeger) Barfknecht was born Feb. 3, 1928, in Willmar, the daughter of Alfred and Geneva (Rodewald) Kroeger. She was baptized as an infant in Willmar, and was confirmed in her faith as a youth in Minneapolis. She received her education in Gaylord, and was a 1947 graduate of Gaylord High School.
On Feb. 8, 1953, she was united in marriage to Gilbert “Gib” W. Barfknecht at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gaylord. After marriage, the couple made their home in Gaylord, and shared 52 years before Mr. Barfknecht died on Jan. 31, 2005.
Mrs. Barfknecht was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gaylord. She and her husband owned and operated the Gaylord Variety Store for 13 years. She was employed as an assistant city clerk for the city of Gaylord for 16 years, retiring in 1995.
She enjoyed watching “Dancing With the Stars” and sports games on TV. She enjoyed flowers, collecting antiques, and fishing and grouse hunting with her husband.
When she needed assistance with her daily care, she became a resident of Harmony River Living Center on April 29, 2015.
She is survived by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Geneva Kroeger; and husband, Gib Barfknecht.
