Editorial cartoon wasn’t accurate

To the Editor:
One of your recent editorial cartoons attempted to appeal to low-information voters by equating Obama’s current scheme to circumvent our immigration laws with executive orders issued by past presidents. The comparison is simply not accurate.
The Reagan and Bush executive actions, for instance, were obviously different than what Mr. Obama is doing now. They were trying to implement an amnesty procedure that Congress had already passed.
Obama is not trying to implement a lawfully created procedure. He is attempting to override Congress and the will of the people by creating amnesty on his own, unlike the Reagan or Bush attempts to facilitate something already legally in existence.
Will our current laws be respected? After Obama’s policies were soundly rejected in November, the lure of millions of new voters for his party may be too much for the president to resist.
The issue is not if immigration reform is needed … the issue is doing things within our current legal framework.
