Edwin Leonard Hlavka was born Dec. 20, 1920, in Hale Township, McLeod County, the son of Anthony “Tony” and Emily (Makovsky) Hlavka. He was baptized as an infant and was confirmed in his faith as a youth, both at Faith Presbyterian Church in Silver Lake. He attended Bear Lake Elementary School through the eighth grade. After school, he stayed at home and helped on the family farm, which most young men did back then. Per his brother Ray, before Ed went into the service, he and his brother Harvey were working on a Model T Ford. While cranking the car to start it, the car backfired and the crank spun backwards and broke Ed’s arm.

On Nov. 6, 1939, at age 18, Mr. Hlavka enlisted in the Army National Guard in Hutchinson. He entered active service on Feb. 10, 1941, and on Feb. 27 he left for training at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Mr. Hlavka was in the Tunisian Campaign, European Middle Eastern Theater and the Italian Campaign. In Africa, he suffered a hand wound, and in Italy, he was wounded by German machine gun fire. He was in the hospital long enough to heal, and then back in the field to Cassino in 1944. He received a Purple Heart. He was wounded again on Aug. 21, 1944, and spent close to a year in a hospital. He was honorably discharged from the Army on June 30, 1945. He received a second Purple Heart. In 1947-1948, he attended Dunwoody Institute during the evening for training in electrical wiring.

On Feb. 27, 1951, he was united in marriage to Deborah Jean Cameron in Silver Lake. They resided in Hopkins and Minnetonka, and shared 64 years of marriage.

Mr. Hlavka was a partner and co-owner of T&R Electric, which did wholesale electric motor rewinding. He and his wife also owned and operated Cut-Price Store in Osseo and Piccadilly Circle in the Yorktown Mall in Edina.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Cameron of Hopkins; brother, Ray (Carol) Hlavka of Tracy; stepdaughter, Toni White of Minneapolis; stepson, Dominic Galianese of Spokane, Washington; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Emily Hlavka; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Raymond Kamrath; brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Emily Hlavka; and brother, Leslie Hlavka.
