Election didn’t end on election day

Our view: Divisiveness continued long after the polls closed

Last week, we speculated that election day, Nov. 8, would bring an end to a long and contentious election year.
When you’re wrong, you’re wrong, and you might as well admit it. Especially when you are so obviously wrong.
The persistently annoying campaign ads may have disappeared from our television sets after the polls closed Nov. 8, but they were quickly replaced by spot news coverage of riots, looting and protests.
There is no doubt such activity will bring attention to a cause, but it’s the wrong kind of attention. Never has a person been endeared to a cause by the sight of a blocked highway or the looting of a business. In fact, those kind of activities widen the divide, not close it.
And the debate over the presidential choices continued to persist on social media for days after the election. In fact, liberals and conservatives are still trading memes, barbs and posts from so-called authentic news sources.
Liberals are clinging by their fingernails to the hope that when the electoral college meets, it will abide what appears to be a popular vote majority for Hillary Clinton and overturn Donald Trump’s apparent ascension to the presidency.
It’s time to accept the inevitable, move on, and try to mend the wounds that were impaled upon our country during the presidential election season.
Let’s hope Trump proves to be more uniting than divisive as our federal government transitions to a new administration.
