Encourage participation in SAVE event Sept. 17

To the Editor:
We are just a couple weeks away from the SAVE Walk for Life event being held at the McLeod County Fairgrounds, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m., in Hutchinson. The event will be held rain or shine.
Help us reduce the stigma and raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. You can support this very important cause by attending or by making a monetary donation.
The money raised at this family-friendly event will provide education to people in our local area, including schools and communities at large, about symptoms of depression and how to deal with thoughts of suicide as well as offer continuing education to professional health-care workers. You do not need to participate in the walk portion of the event to attend. There will be something for everyone, including keynote speakers, music by Chopper, face painting, wacky hair fun, inflatable obstacle course and moonwalk, food, beverages and resource fair of local agencies, all of which is included in the registration fee. The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under, or $50 for a family of five (two adults/three children). There also will be a silent auction.
Depression is a treatable medical illness marked by changes in mood, thoughts, energy and behavior that affects more than 23 million adult Americans each year. Death by suicide is a public health concern. Did you know that somebody in the United States dies by suicide every 12 seconds? It can happen to anyone; we never thought it would happen in our families, but it did! If we can help just one person, our mission will be accomplished.
If you would like to sign up for the walk prior to Sept. 17, please visit www.save.org/
events or contact one of us. You can also register the day of the event at the door.
