With end of school year comes new beginnings

To the Editor:
In a couple of days we will be wishing the class of 2016 all the best as they graduate from GSL High School. This day is always a special one because it is the pinnacle of a student’s journey through school. At this time, many doors are opened and many choices need to be made about one’s future … and the results of these choices could be in place for the rest of their lives.
As I reflect back on the class of 2016, I find myself feeling a great deal of pride, as this class has been such a wonderful group of kids. It’s going to be a happy/sad feeling watching them walk across that stage. Thank you, GSL Class of 2016, for all of your hard work, dedication, and leadership in making GSL such a great place to go to school. Best of luck — you will certainly be missed.
Moving on to the construction side of our world, as you can see, we have a fence up and some “action” has started. Lots of action will begin very soon. For starters, the link that connects the field house to the high school will be taken down sometime during the week of May 23-27. At this time, you will need to enter the field house at the northeast doors that lead into Gym 1. This will be the entrance into the field house until the completion of the project.
From a programing standpoint, I am excited to let everybody know that GSL will become a K-12 accredited Project Lead the Way (PLTW) School starting in the fall of 2016. PLTW is an accredited STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program that provides a “transformative learning experience for K-12 students and teachers. PLTW creates an engaging environment and empowers students to develop in-demand knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in an evolving world,” as stated by PLTW.
We need to continue to teach kids to problem solve, be creative and critical thinkers, and how to communicate and collaborate. This program brings it all together and fits in very nicely with all of the other subject matter we are currently teaching. No matter what career path our students will be on, this program will help give them the necessary skills to be a successful member of society. We are very excited to get things started and will take the summer months to prepare so, when school starts, we will be ready to go!
This past Friday we had our annual Celebration Day. It was a day to celebrate, recognize and bring together all of us at GSL. It was a wonderful morning and one that helped us reflect on a great school year. With only a few days left in the 2015-2016 school year, we once again say congratulations to the class of 2016 and best of luck to you! You have made your mark as another very successful class at Glencoe-Silver Lake. It is truly a “Great day to be a Panther.”
