Farm to early care a priority for local head start program

Getting kids to eat vegetables is no small task. That’s why the Tri-Valley Opportunity Council’s (TVOC) head start programs are taking a different approach. Through the Farm to Early Care program, TVOC is working to introduce vegetables early.
The organization introduces new fruits and vegetables every couple of weeks in the 15 head start centers across the state and one in North Dakota, including the migrant and seasonal center located in Glencoe.
The chosen fruit or vegetable is not incorporated into the meals and snacks, but also into the curriculum, according to Child Nutrition Manager, Jami Lee.
All the meals at the centers are made from scratch and served family style. During meals, staff talks to the kids about the food, where it comes from and how it grows.
