The filing period for local offices opens on July 31

Our view: Get involved, run for a local office.

Have you complained about a decision made by your city council, township board or the school board?
Who has thought, “I could do a better job in that seat.”?
Are you happy with how things are going in your city, township or school district and want to see the positive things continue?
If you answered yes to any one of the questions above, we encourage you to run for office.
The filing period for local city councils, the GSL school board and township boards opens on July 31 and runs through Aug. 14 at 4 p.m.
Our local governments are citizen run and anyone living within the boundaries of the council or board is qualified to run. There is not a special degree, level of experience or expertise to run.
The United States Constitution says that a government of, by and for the people rests on everyday citizens contributing to our way of life.
By running for a local office you have the opportunity to make a difference by advocating for the causes important to the community. Even if not elected, you can draw attention to a specific issue and encourage voters to share your passion.
Running for office is a way to give back. You can bring your own unique expertise to a council or board.
A fresh perspective is needed and welcome. It is amazing what a fresh set of eyes can do for an issue.
All of the open seats in McLeod County will be unopposed on the ballot this year. Maybe that is good, maybe not.
Give voters a choice, give yourself an opportunity to get involved in your community and give back, give us the opportunity to vote for you.
We will see you on the Nov. 6, 2018 ballot!
