Final grant in place, taxiway construction begins

The Glencoe City Council resolved to accept a grant for the Glencoe Municipal Airport taxiway project from the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The grant is for $101,813, which is 5 percent of the project’s cost.
The remaining cost is divided between the city and a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA grant covers 90 percent of the project’s cost while the city will pay the remaining 5 percent.
Mayor Randy Wilson asked if the city had levied money for its portion of the project. City Administrator Mark Larson explained the city has levied both this year and last in preparation for the project.
The resolution passed 4-1, with Council Member Allen Robeck voting no.
Construction for the project is currently under way. Though the construction crews have encountered wetlands in some areas, Park Superintendent Mike Drew said the rest of the area has really good material.
At the end of this week and into next week, the crews will work on an extension on the county ditch as well as hauling in sand to build up the taxiway surface.
The project is expected to be completed in the first week of October.
“If the weather cooperates, it’s moving along really well,” Drew said.
