First blood drive of 2015 set for April 29

To the Editor:
It’s that time of year:  Spring is springing; grass is greening; birds are nesting;  trees are budding; flowers are poking out of the earth; and the first Glencoe Community Blood Drive of 2015 is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29, at the Glencoe City Center Ballroom from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. The American Red Cross has set our goal at 122 units for this blood drive.
Many slots on the donor schedule have already been reserved following last November’s blood drive. The volunteer callers will be in the process of contacting donors to set up appointments to fill the remainder of the schedule. If you have not been contacted by one of our volunteer callers in the next week, please contact our Scheduling Coordinator Nelda Klaustermeier at 320-864-3475 to make an appointment.
Our blood donors are ordinary people: high school students, factory and office workers, business executives, retirees, parents and grandparents, and people from every walk of life. But they share one thing — a generous spirit with a desire to give back to their community and help others. Blood donors play an integral role in the delivery of modern health care.
Donated red blood cells do not last forever; they have a shelf-life of up to 42 days.  Many life-saving medical treatments and procedures involve blood transfusions and would not be possible without a safe and reliable blood supply. That’s why your donation at this blood drive is vital — you’ll feel good knowing that by donating one unit, you can help change up to three lives.
Every two seconds, someone receives a unit of blood.  The need is constant. It is the mission of the American Red Cross to meet that need. You can help! Thank you for doing your part to make this first important drive of the year a successful drive — someone’s life depends on it!
