Food shelf receives $2,500 donation

McLeod Emergency Food Shelf received a $2,500 donation from America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund and directed by local farmer, Nathan Schmalz of Lester Prairie (McLeod County).
The donation will help the organization continue purchasing a variety of healthy and consistent food options for its clients. By using the local food bank, Second Harvest Heartland, as a food source to obtain perishables such as meats and produce as well as getting the best price possible through local grocers for things like eggs and cheese, the amount of foods purchased is stretched as far as possible.
Nearly $118,000 was spent in 2015 on food purchases above and beyond the 461,000 pounds received through donations. A donation of this amount has a huge impact on the overall yearly food budget and provides for an additional 1,923 meals.
