Fundraiser to benefit juvenile diabetes

Get up, check blood sugar, eat, take insulin, go to school, check, insulin, lunch, go home, check blood sugar, eat, check and check again. These days Carl Horrman’s schedule is a little different than the average teenager. Nearly four years ago, at the age of 10, he was diagnosed with Type I diabetes.
Type I diabetes is a disease where the body does not produce insulin, which is needed to break down sugars and regulate glucose. It is typically seen in children and young adults and cannot be cured or outgrown.
Though the Horrman family has a history of Type I diabetes, Carl’s mother Jean Horrman said his diagnosis was still troubling.
“We have a family history of it so we knew the signs,” Jean explained. “It was still hard to accept.”
After four years of dealing with the disease, Carl and Jean will be involved for the first time with the sixth annual Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes Fundraiser in Winsted. The event will take place Saturday, March 5, at the Blue Note Ballroom from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature shopping, a silent auction, portraits, massages, carnival games, live music and a bake sale with proceeds going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF).
Carl said it was important for him to get involved because he knows many people are affected by this disease.
“It seemed interesting that you could get out and help run a fundraiser for people,” Carl said. “It’s a cause that many people do have around the United States.”
