Girls’ cagers claim split

A quick break from Wright County Conference West competition brought the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team its first win in three weeks. However, a return to circuit play delivered the Panthers’ sixth loss in the last eight games.
Last week began victoriously by means of a 55-33 win at Section 2AA rival Sibley East on Monday, Feb. 4.
GSL scored more points in the first half than it allowed the Wolverines in the entire game. The Panthers held a 38-20 advantage at the break before cruising to the 22-point win.
Guard Miah Monahan led all scorers with 26 points, while backcourt mates Alison Kettner and Olivia Lemke logged 13 and seven points, respectively.
Monahan led the team with four assists and tied Lemke with a squad-best seven rebounds. Forward Kasidy Cacka had six boards. Monahan and Kettner each had four steals to pace the visitors.
The win ended the Panthers’ four-game losing streak and gave the team a 5-2 record against fellow Section 2AA squads. GSL is currently holding on to the No. 4 spot in the 2AA North subsection rankings.
A trip to Litchfield on Friday, Feb. 8, saw the Panthers return to the unhappy side of the scoreboard with a 63-54 loss to the Dragons. The hosts staked themselves to a 32-22 halftime edge and held the visitors at arm’s length over the final 18 minutes for the win.
Monahan and fellow guard Kendall Guerrero shared GSL’s scoring lead with 12 points apiece. Cacka’s six rebounds paced the Panthers, as did Monahan’s five assists and six steals.
It was GSL’s second loss to Litchfield in two tries this season. The Dragons also eked out a 43-40 win in Glencoe on Jan. 11.
The defeat dropped the Panthers to 10-10 on the season and 3-6 in WCC West play entering this week. GSL has lost five consecutive conference games since a 45-42 win at Mound Westonka on Jan. 15.
The Panthers were scheduled to host the White Hawks on Tuesday, Feb. 12, after the Chronicle went to press. GSL is slated to host Rockford on Friday night, Dassel-Cokato on Monday, and New London-Spicer this coming Tuesday.
Monday’s game against the Chargers is a makeup of a previously postponed contest – originally scheduled for Jan. 29, but not played due to inclement weather.
