Girls’ cagers dominate pair of WCC West rivals

A pair of lopsided road wins over teams from the bottom third of the Wright County Conference kept the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team among the conference frontrunners entering this week.
The Panthers toppled Mound Westonka 65-44 on Tuesday, Jan. 23, then overwhelmed Rockford 76-47 three nights later to improve to 6-1 in the WCC West standings, one-half game behind league-leading Watertown-Mayer.
Neither game presented much in the way of doubt for GSL, with the Panthers seizing sizable halftime leads before cruising in the final 18 minutes.
At Mound Westonka, GSL posted a 36-23 halftime edge en route to a 21-point win. Guards Mac Monahan and Olivia Lemke scored 23 and 16 points, respectively, with backcourt mate Miah Monahan posting 10 points.
At Rockford, the Panthers roared to an 18-0 advantage before leading 37-11 at halftime. The Rockets deposited a healthy share of three-point shots in the second half to keep the margin from getting much worse, but GSL still pulled off a 29-point victory.
Miah Monahan led all scorers with 24 points, with Lemke close behind at 23 points. Mac Monahan, lost in the second half to an ankle injury, scored 11 points.
Forward Zoe Christensen had eight points, with frontcourt partner Kasidy Cacka chipping in six points.
The Panthers entered this week six games above .500 at 12-6 overall. GSL hosted traditional WCC West heavyweight New London-Spicer on Tuesday, Jan. 30, after the Chronicle went to press. The Wildcats entered that game at 12-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
GSL hosts Dassel-Cokato at 7 p.m. Friday, in its final game until Friday, Feb. 9. The Chargers entered the week at 1-7 in conference play and 4-13 overall.
