Girls’ cagers host, place second in tournament

With a runner-up appearance in its own holiday tournament, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team concluded the first month of its season with a 5-4 record.
The Panthers went 1-1 in tournament play, defeating Belle Plaine 67-46 on Thursday, Dec. 27, before falling 66-39 to Holy Family the next day.
GSL opened the tourney in fine fashion, taking a 36-13 halftime lead on the visiting Tigers before cruising to the 21-point win.
Guard Miah Monahan led the hosts with 18 points, while backcourt mates Alison Kettner and Olivia Lemke recorded 15 points apiece.
The tables were turned on the Panthers in the tourney title game.
After thumping Detroit Lakes 84-59 in its tournament semifinal, Holy Family blitzed GSL in the championship tilt.
The Fire went up 30-16 by halftime and kept in up after the break, outscoring the hosts 36-23 en route to the 27-point win.
Monahan was the lone GSL player to manage double-digits on the scoreboard, leading all scorers with 20 points. Lemke chipped in eight points in the losing effort.
The win/loss week matched a recent pattern for the Panthers, who have paired a defeat after each of the last three victories since a three-game winning streak to begin December.
GSL returns to the court this Thursday with a home game against Section 2AA opponent Jordan before traveling to Dassel-Cokato for the Wright County Conference West opener on Friday night.
