Girls' cagers in a groove

The new year began in victorious manner for the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team, with the Panthers cruising to a pair of home victories last week.

GSL, coming off a runner-up finish in the Hayfield Tournament to close out 2015, opened 2016 by blowing out Belle Plaine, 71-25, on Tuesday, Jan. 5, and then topping Litchfield, 56-42, on Friday, Jan. 8.

“I don’t want to jinx anything, but we’ve won four of our last five against some good opponents,” coach Zach Otto-Fisher said.

Belle Plaine offered little in the way of competition against a Panthers squad that roared to a 24-0 lead. GSL led the Tigers 47-15 at halftime before winning by 46 points in the final tally.

“We really put the throttle down against Belle Plaine,” Otto-Fisher said.

The contest fully displayed the progression of the Panthers’ offense, which had prior to Christmas but has come on like gangbusters as of late, boasting shooting percentages of over 50 percent in each of the team’s last three games.
