Girls' hoop rolling with the punches

With the season just rounding the halfway point, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team continued to sport a .500 record in spite of back-to-back defeats against the top two teams in the Wright County Conference West last week.

After opening 2016 with a pair of victories to hit a high water mark of 7-5 on the year, the Panthers were knocked down a few pegs in a 78-59 loss at WCC West leader Watertown-Mayer on Tuesday, Jan. 12 and a 51-45 home setback vs. conference No. 2 Annandale three nights later.

“It hurts to go 0-2 against conference teams,” coach Zach Otto-Fisher said. “But our girls battled.”

GSL took it on the chin in a 19-point loss at Watertown. The Royals ran out to a 38-24 halftime lead and increased their edge until the final horn sounded. Guards Maddie Monahan and Molli Cacka led the Panthers with 19 and 15 points, respectively. Monahan had nine rebounds and five assists, while Cacka notched five boards and three assists.

“It was a tough night,” Otto-Fisher said. “We had a couple of girls who just were not on their game and it was hard for the others to get their shots to go.”

While it appeared the Annandale game would have much the same story, GSL wrote a much different final chapter.
