Girls' hoopsters get first taste of competition

The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball program dipped its toe in the pool of competition for the first time this season with a morning of scrimmages at Waconia High School on Saturday, Nov. 21.

“It was a good morning,” coach Zach Otto-Fisher said. “We hadn’t put in our offense yet, but we did a lot of good things defensively. We focused a lot on defense and did some very nice things – got beat up on the boards, which we expected.”

GSL, a Class AA program, matched up against the host Wildcats – a AAA team – as well as Class AAAA squads from Maple Grove and Woodbury.

“Those 4A schools, they have much more size and depth,” Otto-Fisher said. “We walked in thinking we were a good shooting team, but Maple Grove? They are a great shooting team.”

Still, the coach thought his squad handled the challenge well, even with just a few scant days of practice under their belt.
