Girls soccer claims first win

The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer team opened their home schedule in fine style by defeating visiting Worthington on Tuesday, Sept. 8, but the Panthers were blanked 7-0 in their first conference road game at Mound Westonka two days later.

GSL and Worthington were tied 0-0 at halftime of their contest, before forward Shelby Clouse was knocked down in the box five minutes into the second half to earn a penalty kick. Midfielder Emily Thalmann converted the kick for a 1-0 lead.

The Trojans leveled the score at 1-1 on a goal ten minutes later and the squads appeared destined for a tie at the final horn.

However, Thalmann found Clouse on a crossing pass which the senior directed into the net with just seven seconds remaining to make a 2-1 winner out of the home side.

“I’m very proud of how they never stopped fighting and got the win late into that game,” coach Zach Otto-Fisher said.

The outcome was not so sweet at Mound Westonka, with the hosts overwhelming GSL from the start en route to the shutout win.
