Girls' soccer season comes to a close

The 2016 season came to a close for the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls' soccer team in a 6-0 loss at St. Peter in the opening round of the Section 2A Tournament. The Panthers were seeded 13th in this year's sectional bracket, while the Saints were the No. 4 seed.

With the loss, GSL finished up the autumn with a 3-12 record that included 4-0 wins over Rocori and Worthington to start the season and a final 2-1 triumph against Jordan on Monday, Oct. 3.

The Panthers endured three losses in their final week of the regular season. GSL fell 10-1 at New Prague on Tuesday, Oct. 4, and then dropped back-to-back 2-0 decisions to Mayer Lutheran and Delano on Oct. 6 and 7, respectively.

The team also suffered a greater loss in the final week as sophomore midfielder and co-captain Emily Thalmann suffered a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus in her knee during the Jordan game.

Sophomore goalkeeper Destiney Exsted continued to put up gigantic save numbers in the final three games, logging 23 saves against New Prague, 13 in a rain-shortened 60-minute contest against Mayer Lutheran and 16 against Delano.
