Girls' soccer snaps losing skid

After a very difficult September that saw the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer team drop eight consecutive games without claiming so much as a single goal, the Panthers earned themselves a most welcome victory to begin their final month of the 2016 season on Monday, Oct. 3.

Behind goals from Megan Fehrenbach and Emily Thalmann and 21 saves from goalkeeper Destiney Exsted, GSL claimed their third win of the year via a 2-1 triumph over Jordan at Stevens Seminary Stadium.

“It was great to get back on the winning side of things,” coach David Frasier said.

Both teams were scoreless at the half, before Fehrenbach netted the Panthers’ first goal since a 4-0 win at Worthington on Aug. 30. However, both teams were tied 1-1 heading into the final 20 minutes of the game before Thalmann – who had assisted on Fehrenbach’s tally – recorded the eventual game-winning strike that sent the home side to victory and lifted the burden of defeat from the team’s shoulders.

“One of the main areas we have been trying to address throughout the season is staying positive regardless of the score or circumstances,” Frasier said. “Last night, we did that and it paid off with positive results. We have steadily improved throughout the season, and I’m proud of the effort the girls have given.”
