Girls' soccer squad looks for further improvement

With just 10 wins to its name this decade, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls soccer team is far from a powerhouse, but the squad continues to trend upward as its participating numbers keep growing.

“We are at 43 girls in the program this year,” coach Zach Otto-Fisher said. “We have new kids coming out from a number of classes to play soccer and the interest is definitely growing.”

The program’s number count is as high as it has been as Otto-Fisher enters his fifth season at the helm, with 17 girls participating in varsity practice as of last week.

“It’s a young and small program,” he said. “We are determining who will play what roles and will utilize a lot of experimental strategies.”

The squad was dealt a heavy loss long before its first game this autumn as goalkeeper Zoe Christensen was lost for the year due to surgery on July 24 to repair a torn ACL suffered while playing club soccer last spring.

“It’s a tough loss on the field, but she’s still very involved with the team,” Otto-Fisher said. “It’s like having another coach out here.”
