Glencoe blood drive collected 124 units

To the Editor:
Many thanks to all the faithful donors who donated at the Glencoe Community Blood Drive on Wednesday, July 27 — especially those who braved the downpours to enter the building during the afternoon.
The goal set for us by the American Red Cross was 131 units; we fell just a little short of the goal and collected 124 units. Each unit can benefit up to three patients, so the 124 units has the potential to help 372 patients who desperately need your help. What a tribute to the Glencoe community and surrounding area!  As the American Red Cross (ARC) Collection Supervisor Deb said in her recap note for us: “Thanks for making a HUGE DIFFERENCE at this time of GREAT NEED!” (Deb’s all-caps emphasis).
There were 125 people who appeared for donating. Fifteen were deferred by ARC (unable to donate at this drive) for various reasons. Two were unable to complete their donations. That left 108 people who donated the 124 units: 91 gave whole blood units, and 17 double-red donors gave 33 units. We had 21 walk-ins who partially made up for the 23 no-shows again at this drive.  Imagine the additional patients we could have helped if the 23 no-shows had shown up and donated:  23 x 3 = 69 additional patients!
My thanks also go to all the following:
• My co-chair/scheduling coordinator Nelda Klaustermeier and her team of callers who do the hard work before, during and after the drives preparing the donor schedules;
• Our dedicated volunteers who so graciously assist before and during the drive — we couldn’t do it without them!
• The Glencoe City Center and its custodians, Coborn’s and Security Bank for their continued support of the three blood drives each year;
• Thrivent Financial Action Team for financial support for this drive.
We are also looking to expand our volunteer list for canteen workers and observers. If you think you would enjoy volunteering two-to-three hours every 12 to 15 months working at a blood drive, please call me for more information: 320-238-2298. If I happen not to answer, please leave a message and I will get back to you.
The next Glencoe Community Blood Drive is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 1 p.m to 7 p.m., at the Glencoe City Center Ballroom. Many July donors have already pre-scheduled their November appointments. There are still open time slots so if you want to get in on the action and pre-set your November appointment, please call Nelda Klaustermeier at 320-864-3475.
Nelda and I thank you. But most importantly, the recipient patients and their families thank you — the donors. You have made a difference in the lives of 372 people! Blessings on your summer!
