Glencoe Historic Preservation Society to host quilt show

The Glencoe Historic Preservation Society (GHPS) will host a quilt show Saturday, May 6, at First Lutheran Church in Glencoe.
The show will feature more than 130 quilts plus a number of wall hangings and table runners. Quilts new and old will be featured.
The McLeod County Historical Society will be providing a number of quilts from its collection including:
• The Crazy quilt made by Josephine Brewer Gilbert of Glencoe in 1888. She was born late December 1831 in Massachusetts and married Gideon Gilbert. In September 1856, the couple came to Minnesota.
Her husband Gideon was one of the best-known citizens of McLeod County as he was one of its earliest settlers and served as county treasurer, county auditor, justice of the peace, postmaster, member of the village council and on the board of education.
• The Bear Paw quilt made in 1906 by the Ladies Aid of the Methodist Church of Glencoe. Men’s and ladies' names are written on the white cross pieces of each square.
• The Friendship Quilt includes embroidering of the names of several members of the First Congregational Church in Glencoe. For more, see the April 26 print edition of The Chronicle.
