Group blends passion for gardening with service to community
There’s a group of residents who enjoy the chance to practice a hobby they cherish while giving back to their community. They see it as a win-win for themselves and Glencoe alike.
The group helps the city out with daily or as-needed watering of hanging planters intended to beautify Glencoe’s downtown area. Its members include Eileen Harff, Gloria and Roger Hilgers, Scott Rhodes, Linda Roisum, Helga and Tom Schmidt, Maria Wolter, Shari and Dale Hoops, Terry Jones, Jim Entinger, a group of local Girl Scouts and phantom caretakers, anonymous passers-by willing to stop and pull a few unsightly weeds just to keep the gardens looking their best. Rogers Hilgers, Jones and Entinger handle watering the hanging plants on a rotating schedule with public works staff.
