GSL cross-country squads both victorious at NYA meet

The Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams each got their respective seasons off to a proper start with wins in Norwood Young America’s Alumni Meet on Saturday, Aug. 29.
The GSL boys claimed 23 points, topping host NYA’s 26-point showing. Maple Lake/Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity did not register a team score after competing with just three runners. The Panther girls claimed 24 points, bettering NYA’s 35 points and ML/LP/HT’s 81 points.
Michael Schaefer claimed top honors in the boys’ race, finishing first with a time of 16 minutes, 55 seconds on the 5,000-meter course at Baylor Park. His finish was nearly a full two minutes ahead of runner-up Ben Barth of NYA, who logged an 18:47.
Thirteen boys ran in the three-team meet, with the Panthers placing all five of its runners in the top eight. Tony Fischer was third in 19:06, with Joseph Knudten and Michael Meyer taking fifth and sixth, respectively, in 19:20 and 19:28. Tyler Hausladen was eighth in 19:40. 
Annamaria Falcon took second in the girls’ run, finishing their equidistant course in 22:48. She was followed closely by Megan Siewert in third place at 22:50 and Majkya Metcalf in fourth at 23:01. All five of the GSL girls also placed in the top eight, as Gia Venier took seventh in 24:15 while Savannah Stradtmann placing eighth in 24:16.
