GSL History Club enjoys trip to Boston, New York

The Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) High School History Club recently took a five-day trip to the East Coast, visiting Boston first and then heading south to New York City. The trip focused on exploring and touring educational and historical landmarks, museums and monuments. The club left for the trip on June 18 and returned on June 22.
The history club, which usually meets twice a month during the school year, has roughly 15 participating members, but only six students went on the trip: Aubrey Giesen, Grace Draeger, Alyssa Ebert, Elsie Graupmann, Shawna Goettl and Paige Litzau. Beth Rumrill, GSL’s high school secretary, chaperoned the group.
Aubrey Giesen, a senior at GSL and the president of the history club, came up with the idea for the trip. She announced her idea to the club in November and preparation for the trip began in December. “We had to go to a school board meeting so they could approve the trip itself and then they also had to approve a couple fundraisers we wanted to do,” said Giesen.
On average, each student on the trip received about $600 between the fundraisers and the donations given to the club, although it also depended on how involved individual students wanted to be with the fundraisers. The total cost of the trip for each student was $2,200, which covered two meals a day, flights, busing, hotels and tour costs.
