GSL Knowledge Bowl captures another state championship trophy

It may have been Friday the 13th with a major blizzard on the way, but that didn’t stop the Glencoe-Silver Lake Knowledge Bowl program from adding another state championship trophy to its collection.
The team had qualified for the State meet on March 17.
“It’s hard to keep practicing when there is a month between the regional and state meet,” said Coach Vicky Harris. All GSL’s team members are involved in spring activities, including baseball and the spring play.
“The same weather that is making it hard for spring sports to really get going made it hard for us to practice, but on this day the weather was unable to hold GSL down,” added Harris.
The state meet starts with a banquet Thursday afternoon, at which all the students are introduced. Teams take the written round in the evening, so they will know where they start out for the first oral round on Friday morning. When the scores were posted, GSL found out that it had scored 55 out of 60 points and was tied for first place with Hawley. (In Class AA, Edina had also scored 55, but no team had a higher score.) Minnesota Valley Lutheran (MVL), in third place with 52, would also begin the meet in Room One.
Normally, there are five oral rounds on Friday at the state meet. This year, teams learned during breakfast that there would only be four rounds, so that more teams would be able to get home safely before the big weekend storm began.
The first oral round began at 8:30 a.m. GSL had a powerful start. In the first 15 questions, team members outscored their competition 7-3-2. They continued to dominate during the rest of the round, finishing the round with 17 points against Minnesota Valley Lutheran with 11 and Hawley with 8. During this round, they answered questions about pirates, famous artworks, and the Treaty of Versailles, among many others.
MVL and Hawley both dropped to Room Three for the second round. Barnesville and St. John’s Prep moved up to Room One. (At this point, there was a seven-way tie for second place, nine points behind GSL. The St. John’s Prep coach commented, “You can’t make this stuff up!”) These two teams were outscored by GSL 23-7-7. Meanwhile, MVL had scored 22 points in Room Three, while International Falls scored 20 points in Room Four. Those two teams moved up to Room One for the third round.
“This GSL team is extremely good at buzzing – knowing when to be fast and when to wait,” said Harris.
