GSL School Board split on new contracts for Sonju, Sander
In the wake of voters rejecting a proposed increase in the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District’s operating levy Nov. 6, the school board declined to renew the contracts of the district’s superintendent and its business manager.
The board was split on both proposed contract renewals. Directors Donna VonBerge, Kevin Kuester and Jamie Alsleben voted against renewing the contracts for Superintendent Chris Sonju and Michelle Sander, the district’s business manager. Directors Clark Christianson, Jason Lindeman and Anne Twiss voted for the renewals at the Nov. 13 meeting.
The impasse killed the motion to approve the proposed 220-day contracts. Both contracts were for three years beginning July 1, 2019 and running through June 30, 2022.
The contract directors Christianson and Lindeman negotiated with Sonju calls for a 1.8 percent salary increase in each year of the deal and a cumulative increase of 7.12 percent for the three years. Sonju’s salary in 2018-19 is $149,312.
Sander’s proposed contract calls for 2.5 percent salary increase in each year of the contract and a cumulative increase of 7.05 percent in salary and benefits over three years. Her salary this year is $90,100.
Sander and Sonju are the only GSL School District employees with three-year contracts. Past practice calls for Sonju to have his contract renewed by Nov. 1 or be informed it would not be renewed.
