GSL baseball prepared to defend titles
Expectations are always high when it comes to the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team and this season is no different. Coming off of a 21-6 season that saw the Panthers playing in their second consecutive state tournament, goals remain lofty for the 2016 campaign.
“Our goals are the same every year,” coach Dean Schwirtz said. “Do the little things right on a consistent basis which will allow us to stay in games. We always want to contend for a conference championship and have a chance at getting to state.”
Schwirtz said that his team remains a strong contender to repeat as Wright County Conference West champions, but that Holy Family Catholic will prove a strong challenger to the Panthers’ Section 5AA supremacy.
Senior shortstop Teddy Petersen and centerfielder/pitcher Mitch Pinske captain this year’s team, which focuses on solid defense and “doing the little things right,” according to Schwirtz.
Petersen’s name regularly appeared at the top of the team’s statistical categories last season as he batted .388 with 25 RBI, 32 runs scored and 19 stolen bases. Pinske went 3-0 in 14 innings pitched in 2015.
