GSL baseball season meets with a quick end

Back-to-back losses in its first two games of the Section 5AA brought the season to a crashing halt for the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team.
Winners of nine in a row earlier this season, the double-helping of defeats concluded the Panthers’ 2017 campaign with a six-game losing skid.
GSL, seeded second in 5AA, opened the postseason with a 6-1 loss to visiting
Annandale in the final game of the spring at Vollmer Field on Tuesday, May 30.
The Cardinals scored two runs in the top of the first and four more in the seventh to take the win.
Carsen Streich scored the Panthers’ lone tally in the bottom of the first. Korey Johnson pitched a complete game for GSL, but took the loss.
The Panthers headed for Rockford for what became their final game of the season the next night against the host Rockets.
Things were looking good for GSL early, with the Panthers holding leads of 5-1 after two and 8-4 after four.
However, Rockford rallied to tie the game with two runs in both of the fifth and sixth innings to send the game into extra frames.
As the Panther bats fell silent, the Rockets surged to the win with an four-run eighth to seal the victory.
Taylor Schauer took the loss in relief of starting pitcher Peyton Sell.
Alex Troska went 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI in his last high school game. Also concluding their senior seasons, Mitch Boesche went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs with Hunter Glaeser going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
GSL wraps up 2017 with a 13-10 overall record.
