GSL considers later start time

Research is showing a significant benefit to later school start times, allowing students to sleep in, especially in the upper grades.
Superintendent Chris Sonju presented research to the Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) School Board Monday, Jan. 12, supporting the benefits of a later start time.
Sonju, with the support of principals Paul Sparby and Bill Butler and assistant principals Dan Svoboda and Joy Frietag, are proposing a 25-minute later start time for the 2017-18 school year.
While not a big change, the adminstration feels that even 25 minutes can make a difference.
In the research presented from an article by Kyla Wahlstrom of the University of Minnesota, available at http://www.kappanonline.org/
later-start-time-for-teens, states that more sleep shows significant decreases in student absences and tardiness.
The research also shows that eight or more hours of sleep per night reduces “risky teen behaviors” such as reducing cigarette, alcohol and marijuana use, as well as depression and sexual activity.
