GSL ends breakfast in classroom

The “breakfast in the classroom” program at Glencoe-Silver Lake elementary schools will end at the end of October, and breakfast will be served in the cafeteria beginning Nov. 3, the GSL School Board heard Monday night.
Business Manager Michelle Sander said she and elementary principal Bill Butler were “just not seeing things we want to see happen.”
Sander said by serving breakfast in the cafeteria again, a hot breakfast will be available for kids, “and I know some kids really missed that.”
Board member Jamie Alsleben asked about instructional time in the classroom and commented about the issue with students getting to class on time. “Wasn’t that one of the reasons for implementing breakfast in the classroom? Will you be nudging kids along out of the cafeteria again to get to class on time?” he asked.
“Because of the operational requirements of serving breakfast in the classroom, we found the opposite. Teachers were losing instructional time for all of the kids, building-wide, at both sites,” Butler said.
