GSL school board hears level three staff grievance
The Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board held a hearing Monday night for a staff grievance filed by Education Minnesota: GSL that is now at a level three. The hearing was part of the board’s regular monthly meeting.
GSL High School social studies teacher Brea Wiblemo addressed the board with her case. She said she had been contracted for second and third trimester overloads. Due to her maternity leave, she said her third trimester overload was removed.
At first, Wiblemo said she did not respond to the issue, because her contract stated the district could amend it anytime it sees fit. A family friend and lawyer, however, advised her that the contract changes can’t supercede federal law. Wiblemo said the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which covers job assignments, applies in this case.
Wiblemo said the district was attempting to dismiss the case based on timing. She said she waited to file her grievance until after the pay from this third trimester overload was withheld in March in order to have a tangible thing to grieve.
Though she said she will not be there to teach the overload, she should still receive the pay in the same way a person who became sick or injured would. Wiblemo also said she is still being paid for the regular load she will not be present to teach.
