GSL School Board- Meeting

GLENCOE-SILVER LAKE
SCHOOL BOARD

SPECIAL MEETING
OF THE SCHOOL BOARD
GLENCOE-SILVER LAKE SCHOOLS
ISD #2859
MONDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2018

The School Board of Independent School District #2859 met in special session at 7:00p.m. in the Glencoe-Silver Lake Community Room #443/444.

Board Chair Christianson called the
meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. The
following members were present: Kevin Kuester, Jamie Alsleben, Jason Lindeman, Anne Twiss, and Donna VonBerge. In addition were Superintendent Chris Sonju, Business Manager Michelle Sander and Katie Ballalatak/McLeod County Chronicle. Also in attendance were approximately 50 community members.
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
1. There were no announcements.
2. Public input related to the agenda. Comments were heard from Joe Schrempp – neighbor of the Helen Baker property, Earl Dammann, rural farmer, Randy Wilson, Mayor of Glencoe, Pat Chiariello, Glencoe resident, Randall Thallman, Plato farmer.
3. Motion by Lindeman, second by Twiss to approve the agenda.
4. There was no old business.
5. New business centered on the discussion of the purchase proposals for the Helen Baker property. The District has
received three proposals. The City of Glencoe, Decent People Nonprofit and Kenneth Polifka. The proposal from the City of Glencoe was an offer to purchase the property for $1.00 and then for the school district to work with the City of Glencoe to demolish the building and to redevelop the property with a cost to the district not to exceed $300,000.00. The property would be sold to a developer for $1.00. The project would qualify as a tax increment-financing district so the school would be paid back the investment of $300,000 plus an estimated $184,000 in interest over a period of 26 years.
The proposal from Kenneth Polifka was an offer to purchase the building and property for $2.00. Mr. Polifka would take possession on January 2, 2018, utilities may be turned off at the discretion of the district, all costs of demolition, asbestos abatement and removal of debris will be at the expense of Mr. Polifka. The proposal from Decent People Nonprofit was from Alysha Tichey for $1.00. The plan for the property is to renovate the building into a multifaceted stress reduction and overall wellness facility. After a period of discussion and question and answers from the public, there was a motion by Christianson and a second by Kuester to accept the proposal from Kenneth Polifka for the purchase of the Helen Baker property. Motioned carried with all members voting in favor.

Motion by Twiss, second by VonBerge to adjourn the meeting at 7:40 p.m.
