Board Chair Christianson called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. The following members were present: Kuester, Alsleben, Lindeman, Twiss and VonBerge. Director Kuester was absent. In addition, Superintendent Chris Sonju; Business Manager Michelle Sander, Katie Ballalatak/McLeod County Chronicle; Milan Alexander, Technology Staff/Joey Cullen, School Principal: Bill Butler, and Administrative Assistant Brenda Langanki were in attendance
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
1. Announcements The next regular School Board meeting will be on Monday,
October 9, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. - Location GSL Schools Community Room.
2. No public input relating to the agenda was given.
3. Acknowledgements-Superintendent Sonju recognized the IT staff for their phenomenal work in getting the schools prepared for students and staff. He also noted the outstanding work of the custodial team, foodservice, transportation and all other staff members in the preparation for the opening of school. Director Lindeman acknowledged Superintendent Sonju and Business Manager Sander for their extra efforts and leadership during the construction processes and the opening of school.
4. Reports and Presentations: Business Manager Sander reported to the board about the levy certification and building updates. Principal Butler reported to the board.
5. No Student Government/Student Activities reported.
6. Reports/Presentations: Superintendent Sonju reported that the start of the school year is going well, students are finding their way around. The first “Power Hour” worked well for students. More students are eating breakfast. Lunches went well despite some glitches in the kitchen with new equipment. Students are liking the food choices. In the future there will be additional department reports from Community Ed and ECFE. Committee Reports: Director Twiss noted that the next ECFE Community Advisory Committee meeting is September. 18th, 4:30 to 5:30 pm in the GSL ECFE Conference room. The committee is looking for more committee members. This is a great way to get involved and support our community ECFE program. The committee meets 4 times a year for about an hour. Contact the ECFE office for more information.
7. Director Alsleben moved to approve the agenda, seconded by Director Lindeman, Approved unanimously. Motion carried.
8. Motion made by Director Twiss seconded by Director Alsleben to approve the consent agenda with addendum. Approved unanimously. Motion carried.
Approved August bills: August bills are on file and available for review at the Superintendent’s Office, 1621 East 16th Street, Glencoe. Approved Minutes of Regular Board Meeting of August 14, 2017. Resignations: Mark Wigern, HS Special Ed Para, Josh Otto-Fisher – 8th Grade Girls Basketball Coach, Duane Stensvad – 6.75/hrs per day HS Special Ed Para Hirings: Kim Ruschmeier -Lincoln Elementary Principal’s Secretary, replacing Theresa Rusten, Lisa Luedtke - HS Special Ed Para, 6.75/hrs. per day, replacing Jonathan Koehler, Robyn Field - HS Special Ed Para, 6.75/hrs. per day replacing Duane Stensvad, Alicia Fenner - HS Special Ed Para, 6.75/hrs. per day, replacing Mark Wigern, September Bramblett -MS Special Ed Para, 6.75/hrs. per day, replacing, Michelle Willhite, Heidi Hennessey – ECSE Para for 28 hrs. /week replacing Holly Albrecht who transferred to another position. Terry Shogren -.25 Robotics Head Coach, replacing Mike Sunblad. Mike Sunblad -.25 Robotics Head Coach. Jason Kriegel –BPA Advisor, replacing Tom Kenney. Community Education Contracts Traci Schwarzrock-as Community Ed Gymnastics lead and Panther Paws 2017-18 Team Coach.
9. Motion by Director Lindeman made to approve Education Minnesota/ GSL Master Teacher Contract from July 1, 2017, through June 30, 2019, seconded by Director Christianson. Approved unanimously. Motion carried.
10. Director VonBerge moved to designate Superintendent Sonju as the School District’s Identified Official with Authority (IOwA) for the 2017-2018 school year. Only this individual is allowed to authorize access by local education agency users to Minnesota Department of Education secure websites. Director Twiss seconded. Approved unanimously. Motion carried.
11. Director Lindeman motioned for the adoption of the resolution allowing the GSL school district to conduct business on Columbus Day the second Monday in October, in accordance with M.S. 645.44, Subd. 5. The motion for the foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Director Twiss, and upon vote being taken thereon, the following voted in favor thereof: VonBerge, Alsleben, Lindeman, Kuester, Christianson, and Twiss. The following voted against the same: None. Whereupon said resolution was declared duly passed and adopted.
12. Director Twiss motioned to approve the changes in paraprofessional hours for Stacy Anderson from 6.75 to 7.50 hours bases on additional bus supervision and Jean Roe from 6.75 hours to 3.0 hours based on Special Education schedule changes and student needs at GSL JR/SR High Schools. Director Lindeman seconded. Approved unanimously. Motion carried.
13. Director VonBerge moved to certify the maximum amount permitted by law for the preliminary levy for the 2018-2019 school year. Director Alsleben seconded. Approved unanimously. Motion carried.
14. Director Lindeman moved to approve overloads for Trimester 1, Special Education teachers during the 2017-2018 school year. Special Education Cassie Morris: 1/3 overload – 1st trimester. Samantha Jung: 1/3 overload – 1st trimester. Seconded by Director Twiss. Approved unanimously. Motion carried.
15. Motion made by Director Twiss to approve hiring of Carol Silus as a Special Education Paraprofessional for 8 hrs. per day in the JR/SR High School for the 2017-2018 school year: Seconded by Director Lindeman. Approved unanimously. Motion carried.
16. Director Alsleben moved to approve a Letter of Understanding between the School District and Education Minnesota: Glencoe-Silver Lake regarding High School English Teacher Chris Bick’s teaching schedule for the 2017-2018 school year. Although he will not be teaching the same number of classes each trimester, he will still be equivalent to a 1.0 FTE and will be paid accordingly. Director VonBerge seconded. Approved unanimously. Motion carried.
17. Agenda item I. Closing procedures for Helen Baker, no action taken as this was done and approved at the September 14, 2015 school board meeting.
18. Helen Baker property has a tentative purchase agreement with the City of Glencoe, this is the first official proposal. The school board has scheduled a work session for Monday September 25th in the GSL Schools Community, room #443 beginning at 7:30 pm.
19. The following donations were accepted with appreciation: Central MN Sportsman Alliance (Conservation Partners of America) $ 250.00 for GSL Trap Team, Silver Lake American Legion Post 141 $ 300.00 for Band/All State Music Competition. Elynn & Joel Lepel $ 600.00 for Gymnastics/Volleyball/Softball. Panther Boosters $ 300.00 for Pep Band Tunes. Silver Lake Lions Club $ 500.00 for Quest Program. Brownton Lions $ 386.75 for Quest Program. Miscellaneous: Preliminary Enrollment numbers at the start of the school year; so far enrollment is up from 1580 last year to 1605 this year.
Director Lindeman moved to adjourn at 8:09 p.m., motion seconded by Director VonBerge. Approved unanimously. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned.
