GSL students hear about dangers, impacts of vaping

He used a vape regularly during the summer, not thinking ahead to the rules he’d face once the school year began. And then he was caught vaping at school.
The Glencoe-Silver Lake High School senior was suspended for a day earlier this fall. His biggest concern was his father’s reaction.
“It was a little scary,” he said.
Friday, Dec. 14, GSL principal Matt Foss led a presentation on the dangers of vaping. It included health information from the school’s head nurse, potential legal implication from the county attorney who handles cases involving children caught with tobacco products including vapes, and information on consequences for students in activities. The information was presented in three different sessions to seventh-and eighth-graders, freshmen and sophomores, and juniors and seniors.
A similar presentation for parents is planned for this evening, Dec. 19, 6 p.m., in the school’s auditorium. Brett Nelson from Meeker-McLeod-Sibley Community Health Services will present information.
“This is very important to me and I think it should be important to you,” Foss told the upperclassmen, many he’s known since they were in sixth grade. “I care for you very much.”
Foss asked the juniors and seniors to raise their hands if they know a fellow student who owns a vape. Nearly all the students raised their hands. He asked them if they knew someone who used the vape in school.
Again, nearly all the students raised their hands.
The senior, his name is withheld since he’s still a child, is one of a dozen GSL high-schoolers who’ve been caught vaping in school this fall – using tobacco products via an electronic cigarette or similar device.
He tried vaping as an alternative to smoking cigarettes. The boy smoked his first pack of cigarettes over the summer. The taste, smell, cost, none of it was appealing.
“I hated ’em,” he said of cigarettes.
