GSL volleyball wins third straight WCC West title
New London-Spicer didn’t make it easy, but the Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team was able to overcome its upset-minded opponent and claim a third-consecutive Wright County Conference West championship by means of a five-game win over the host Wildcats in the circuit’s westernmost outpost on Tuesday, Oct. 18.
“It felt great to win the conference for the third year in a row,” middle hitter Maddie Monahan said. “It really shows all of our hard work in the summer and at practices pays off.”
It appeared at first that GSL’s conference-clincher might be short work as the visitors powered their way to a 25-8 win in Game 1.
Yet, the hosts had other ideas – bouncing back for a 25-23 win in Game 2 before taking the Panthers to the limit before GSL was able to claim a 27-25 Game 3 win.
NL-S still was not about to make it easy on GSL, instead gritting out a 25-21 win in Game 4 to force a tie-breaking showdown in Game 5.
“(Their) girls came back with focus and pride,” coach Lori Schwirtz said of the Wildcats, who were playing on their Senior Night.
