GSL/LP wrestlers finish seventh at Wildcat Invitational
The Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team spent the bulk of last week out west in New London-Spicer, first taking on the Wildcats head-to-head and then competing in an invitational tournament.
NL-S rallied to defeat the Panthers 37-28 in a dual meet on Thursday, Jan. 18, before GSL/LP bounced back to finish seventh in the 11-team Wildcat Invitational the next evening.
In the dual, the Panthers took an early 9-6 lead on a 7-3 win by Carter Ruschmeier at 106 pounds, a 12-7 victory by Sawyer Varpness at 120 and a 9-3 decision in favor of Zachary Voelz at 126.
However, the Wildcats won the next four matches to take a 25-9 edge. That run was squelched by Riley Butcher, who earned a 13-5 major decision at 160 and Cody Rae won by fall at 170 to pull GSL/LP to within 25-19.
A pair of Panther forfeits at 182 and 195 decided matters in favor of the hosts, who took an insurmountable 37-19 advantage before Aaron Castillo won 6-5 at 220 and Paul Lemke claimed a win by forfeit at 285 to finish off the dual in a nine-point NL-S victory.
