Gubernatorial candidate visits GSL High School
Hannah Nicollet, Independence Party candidate for Minnesota governor, told Glencoe-Silver Lake High School students that she’s “in love with my state,” and has a goal of “always wanting to leave people in a better place than when I met them.”
Nicollet has never held public office before, she told students in Tom Schoper’s social studies class on Thursday morning, but has been involved in politics in other ways since she was a teenager.
She has been involved in the political campaigns of Ron Paul, a former Republican who is now a Libertarian.
Nicollet also has been involved in encouraging people to participate in grassroots politics, making a video on how to participate in caucuses.
“Half the battle in politics is just showing up,” Nicollet said.
Nicollet told students they can get involved even at their age.
She used as an example the federal lunch program. She noted that a lot of students are upset about the policy.
“Are you getting enough to eat?” she asked. “You can do something about it. Write letters to the editor. Write to your federal legislators. Call a press conference and talk about it.”
