Gymnasts close season with optimistic flourish

With a seventh-place finish at the Section 2A Championship Meet on Friday, Feb. 12, the season officially came to a close for the Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnastics team.

While the Panthers’ sectional team score of 121.200 was down slightly from last year’s tally of 123.975, it was this squad’s season high and optimism was abundant as the squad’s competitive campaign came to a close.

“I think the Section meet went excellent,” coach Kim Hahn said. “They all tumbled their hearts out and we had some great scores – some personal records for the girls too. They looked really strong the whole night.”

GSL’s top two finishers in the 2A individual all-around leaderboard – Marissa Greeley and Gia Venier – are in seventh- and eighth-grade, respectively, and none of the Panthers’ top six all-around finishers will be lost to graduation this spring.

“I think the season as a whole went great – when we were averaging 116-117 points a meet as a team, and also have 10 new seventh- and eighth-graders come on the team, I think that says a lot,” Hahn said.
