Gymnasts flip into winter

As the latest to start of Glencoe-Silver Lake’s four winter sports squads, the Panther gymnasts are two weeks into a preparatory stretch that will last until their first meet of the season on Tuesday, Dec. 19.
The added time is welcome to a squad that is adding a quartet of new members to its band of nine returnees.
“We have four new girls that have joined our team this season,” head coach Kim Hahn said. “Some of our veterans trained during the summer and are excited to be back for the season – so yes, we are ready.”
Two Panthers and one Raider will captain the squad in 2017-18; they are the team’s three seniors – Ellie Schmidt and Sierra Trebesch from GSL, as well as Amber Orr from Norwood Young America.
Hahn said she looks forward to working with her gymnasts as they train both on attempting new routines, as well as perfect the ones they already know.
“We have about the same number of girls out for the team as we did last season,” she said. “But this will allow us to spend more time with each of the girls on their routines and fine tune them as we are able.”
Goals vary for team members from gymnast to gymnast. Some team members have been through several seasons of Panther gymnastics, while some are new to the ins and outs of the sport.
“For the girls completely new to the team, the goal is just for them to get a good grasp on how gymnastics works with scoring, skills, etc., and of course to have fun and bond with the rest of the girls,” Hahn said. For the veterans, the goal is to gain some new skills in their routines and all the while adding to their scores – which will help out as a team too.”
The Panthers host their first home meet on Thursday, Jan. 4 against Orono.
