Handing down baseball traditions at GSL camp

Sights and sounds of the coming season filled the Glencoe-Silver Lake High School gymnasium on Monday, March 21 as the GSL baseball program welcomed local youth to the first day of the Panthers annual baseball camp.
“This camp is set up to instill the fundamentals of baseball that is carried over throughout the years that they are involved in the school program,” GSL head baseball coach Dean Schwirtz said.
Seventy-eight youngsters signed up for this year’s camp. Children in grades 1-3 began their camp on Monday, with those in grades 4-6 commencing camp on Tuesday. All six grades conclude camp on Wednesday evening.
Camp attendees are taught not only by members of the GSL coaching staff, but also by Panther players themselves.
“As coaches we encouraged the youth coaches to attend the camp so we are all teaching the same thing and that language is the same from one coach to another,” Schwirtz said.
The camp has been in session each spring since 2001. Schwirtz said that it has been gratifying to see many of the current GSL players that first attended the camp to learn the Panther way now passing that tradition along as camp coaches.
