He was baptized as an infant on Nov. 3, 1918, by the Rev. Strasberg, and was confirmed in his Christian faith as a youth on Aug. 28, 1932, by the Rev. Wiltge, both at St. John’s Church near Biscay. He attended country school until he completed the eighth grade, after which he farmed full time with his father, Herbert.
Despite being an only child, Mr. Sanken served America during a time of war by enlisting in the Army Air Corps in January 1942. He was honorably discharged in January 1945. He served with honor in the Philippines and in Australia.
On July 6, 1946, he was united in marriage with Lorraine E. Zimmerman at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brownton. Their marriage was blessed with six children, Timothy, Adah, Christine, Mark, Joy and John. The couple resided in rural Brownton, and shared 55 years of marriage before Mrs. Sanken died on Dec. 22, 2001.
Mr. Sanken married Frances Olson on April 12, 2008. They loved and supported one another. Mr. Sanken’s children want to thank Frances for all she has done for their father. The couple resided in Hutchinson, and shared nine years of marriage.
Mr. Sanken lived on the family farm and was engaged in dairy, hogs and crop farming until he moved to Hutchinson in 2008.
Mr. Sanken served his church by being a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, ushering, and serving on the church council, as well as other committees over the years. He also served his community on various boards and committees.
He enjoyed farming, cows, hogs and crops. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends.
When he needed assistance with his daily care, he moved into Harmony River in December 2015.
