Helen Mae Piehl, 88, of Silver Lake

Helen Mae Piehl, 88, of Silver Lake, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at the United Hospital in St. Paul.
 
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 5, at Grace Bible Church in Silver Lake with the Rev. Tom Rakow officiating.
 
Casket bearers were Jarrod White, Ron Johnson, Mark Hanke, Alan Piehl, Matt Frauenshuh and Steve Pulkrabek. Interment was in the Grace Bible Cemetery.
 
Helen Piehl was born March 16, 1927, in Hutchinson, the daughter of William “Bill” and Victoria (Byczynski) Pofahl. 
 
She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1945 and continued her education with a one-year course in elementary education. From there, she took evening classes at Mankato State and got her bachelor of science degree in 1967.
 
She taught at various country schools from 1946 through 1960. She continued her teaching career at Lester Prairie as an elementary teacher and later as the librarian for 26 years.
 
On Sept. 30, 1948, Helen M. Pofahl and Ralph E. Piehl were joined in holy marriage at Westlynn Lutheran Church. God blessed their marriage with two sons, Gary and Gene.
 
After a year in Stewart, they moved to Silver Lake and resided at the same address ever since.
 
Mrs. Piehl loved tending to her flowers and gardening.
 
She as a faithful member of Grace Bible Church in Silver Lake. She also was a member of the Silver Lake American Legion Auxiliary Unit 141, the Hutchinson Historical Museum and the Retired Teachers Alumni. She was very active at Grace Bible Church of Silver Lake and cherished its fellowship. She belonged to the Ladies Aid, also.
 
She is survived by her sons, Gary Piehl of Cokato and Gene (Nancy) Piehl of Silver Lake; three grandchildren, Heidi Salisbury, Mark (Heather) Piehl and Janae (Jarrod) Witte; three great-grandchildren, Emma Salisbury and Caleb and Liam Piehl; brother, Bob Pofahl; sisters, Alma Johnson and Sandra (Dave) Frauenshuh; sister-in-law, Myra Bushard; brother-in-law, Gerald Piehl; other relatives and friends.
 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Piehl; great-grandson, Kaydin Salisbury; her parents; sister, Betty Pulkrabek; brother, William Pofahl Jr.; and half-sisters, Irene Painschab and Eleanor Hogan.
